Yoga pants are usually made of bamboo, cotton, synthetics, and cotton-synthetic blends.
Natural materials such as cotton and bamboo are excellent for slow and relaxing types of yoga such as Yin yoga, for example. Both fabrics are soft and pleasant and won’t irritate even the sensitive skin.
Keep in mind though that cotton doesn’t work well for hot yoga or other types of yoga that make you sweat a lot. The fabric gets heavier when wet & sticks to your skin, and as a result, it takes longer for your body to cool down.
If you’re practicing physically challenging types of yoga and/or you’re a heavy sweater than choose synthetics instead of cotton.
Nylon and polyester blends will be your best bet. These materials are great at wicking away moisture. Instead of being absorbed by the fabric, the sweat evaporates from your skin helping you stay dry and avoid the sweat marks. The sportswear made of nylon and polyester are also permeable and help your skin breathe and regulate body temperature.
Another synthetic material spandex, also called Lycra, prevents the yoga pants from deforming. It makes the pants stretch and move with your body while retaining their shape. Spandex also makes it less likely that your pants will split during the deep squat. So make sure the pants have at least a small content of it.
I’d suggest avoiding cotton-synthetic blends because they combine the worst of two worlds. They are soft, but not as soft as pure cotton; wick away sweat, but are not as good as pure synthetics. In addition, they are more like to pill. The weaker cotton tends to break and form a pill. However, instead of falling off during washing, the fuzz will be held by the stronger synthetic fibers.
