Mental health “red flags” that are commonly ignored, but shouldn’t be?
Even small mental health issues deserve our attention, because they can take a huge toll on our physical and mental health in the long run.
Having a mental health issue is nothing to be ashamed of. The majority of people will fit the diagnosis for some mental illness at some point in their lives, according to a study in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology. Sometimes, people don’t address mental health issues because they’re scared of what these issues might say about them. But all they say is that you’re human.
- Over sleeping or constant exhaustion without physical reasons (physical reasons include hard labor, lack of sunlight exposure, sicknesses, lack of exercise and poor diet).
- Indecisiveness to the point of spending more than 30 seconds trying to think of what to eat for lunch/dinner. This means you’d be even more indecisive for big things, which means you’d probably not do any big thing out of hesitation. This further leads to regrets, disappointments and lack of life experience which will exacerbate what mental issues you have.
- Excessive use of humour in conversation. People who constantly crack jokes and then giggle afterwards at their own jokes have self-esteem issues which usually leads to or is caused by mental health problems.
- Excessive use of self depreciation. Your thoughts define you. Constant self depreciation either leads to or is caused by mental health problems.
- Irritability at small things. Dropping a spoonful of your favorite fried rice to the floor in the morning should not ruin your whole day. So does having the ATM breaking down on you, the cashier taking too long with the line or missing the bus. Bonus points if you tell it to others about it.
- Over clinging to the past. If a family or friend keeps talking about the same things that happened in the past, something’s not right. Bonus points if the past that he/she kept talking about was brighter for that person.
- Extreme level of impatience. You already told your boss it’ll take 3 weeks to finish, yet everyday your boss kept asking you about it. This is unhealthy. It places unnecessary pressure on both you and your boss. Don’t be that kind of boss.
- Not having a hobby or a routine. Hobbies and routines are important, the human brain have a strong tendency to think negatively when idle. Hobbies and routines distract your brain from doing so. Doing absolutely nothing constantly is dangerous, except for the few people who are masters to their own thoughts.
- Over 7 hours of screen time on the smartphone every day, especially if it’s on games or social media. You have 24 hours a day: 9 is spent sleeping, 1 on grooming and cleaning, 2 on meals. Don’t spend 60% of the 12 hours remaining on the screen doing things that either are a form of escape from real life (games) or hurts your self-esteem (social media).
