What are some rare diseases in the world?
I want to focus on the rarest diseases of them all — the ultra rare of ultra-rare diseases, if you will! So, What are some rare diseases with only a few cases in the world?
Unfortunately, because record keeping and studies of certain disorders are still ongoing (and diseases are still being identified) there is no master list of the world’s rarest diseases. That’s why today I’m outlining five of the rarest (not necessarily the top five) diseases that affect people around the world that I’ve come across in my research.
But, before I begin I’m going to state that I’ve excluded both polio and smallpox from the discussion. It’s true that they are among the rarest diseases in the world today, and you’ll often find them atop rare disease lists, but that’s only because vaccinations were developed following the deaths of millions of people. Instead, I want to focus only on unsolved ultra-rare diseases.
1. Uncombable Hair Syndrome.
People with this condition have dry, frizzy hair that becomes lighter and super-hard to comb.
As of April 2017, there are about 100 known cases of Uncombable Hair Syndrome worldwide, but the actual number could be much higher.
2. Alien Hand Syndrome (AHS), also known as Dr. Strangelove Syndrome
(1964 Stanley Kubrick movie), is an extremely rare form of neurological disorder, usually found on non-dominant hands.
The main manifestations of the disease are:
The patient sees his hand not as belonging to his own body, but as an individual with a sense of self, and thinks that all the actions of the hand are performed by the hand itself. Although AHS patients still have normal senses and can feel external stimuli such as temperature and pain, they don’t think they can control their hands at all.

People with AHS exhibit involuntary touching and grasping movements under certain circumstances, such as touching their face or tearing clothes, involuntarily stuffing food into their mouth, or blocking the movement of the other hand. In more extreme cases, they choke themselves and suffocate.
Patients with this condition typically personify the hand, believing it to be possessed by a celestial being, an evil spirit, or an alien. He may also give the hand a name and may even be able to tell the hand’s past life story.
While this very real medical condition is common in horror movies, only a few dozen cases have actually been recorded worldwide since the first diagnosis of Alien Hand Syndrome was found in 1909.
3. Dermatographic urticaria (also known as dermographism, dermatographism or “skin writing”)
Is a skin disorder and one of the most common types of urticaria, affecting 2–5% of the population.
If you use a nail or ballpoint pen across the skin, then the skin immediately becomes red. It takes about half an hour to an hour for swelling and irritation to go down. And it is very itchy.
However, people with artistic skills use it to create art on their skin (I used to do this when I was bored as a kid), something like this.
It may not be uncommon, but it’s interesting.
